A study of tractor-trailer accidents in Washington State indicates that defective equipment or vehicle parts may make a truck accident more likely, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The study, performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), looked at several truck crashes. In each situation, the researchers chose three trucks that passed by the crash site just before or just after the accident. One week after the accident, the three “test” trucks and the truck involved in the accident were examined by Washington State Patrol officers with experience enforcing equipment rules for large trucks and identifying defective or dangerous faults in truck parts.

The study revealed that 77 percent of the trucks that had crashed had a defective or poorly maintained truck part that would have earned a traffic ticket, compared to only 66 percent of the trucks that did not crash. Meanwhile, 41 percent of the commercial vehicles involved in accidents had defective truck equipment or a system bad enough that officers would have placed the truck out of service, while only 31 percent of the non-accident trucks had such a defect. Of the collisions studied, 56 percent involved a truck with defective brakes, while 21 percent involved a truck with a steering problem.

These numbers reveal how crucial it is for truck drivers and their employers to ensure that drivers have the properly cared-for equipment they need to do their jobs safely. When a truck is running on defective, weak, broken, or improperly-installed parts, the risk of an accident and severe injury increases.

A tragic crash on I-44 involving two school buses, a semi truck, and several passenger vehicles has left two teens dead and at least sixty-four people injured, according to a news report from KMOV. The school buses were both carrying students to Six Flags on a band trip when the crash occurred.

According to investigators, the Missouri truck crash was a chain-reaction event that began when the semi truck, which was not towing a trailer at the time, began slowing down as it approached a construction zone. A pickup truck hit the semi, claiming the life of its 19-year-old driver. Meanwhile, behind the truck accident, two school buses changed lanes to avoid the truck accident but didn’t see the stopped cars in the other lane, which resulted in the school buses hitting both the stopped cars and one another. One student in the first bus lost her life when the two buses collided, and both buses contained students who were injured.

As many as 64 people were injured in the accident, including several of the students in the school buses. Most of the students have been treated for their injuries and are out of the hospital, although two girls remain under hospital care with serious injuries.

When an accident involves a large truck or a bus, the increased size and weight of the larger vehicle can make injuries much worse than they would be if only passenger vehicles were involved in the collision. The experienced Missouri truck accident attorneys at Page Law can help you understand your rights and options after a truck accident.

A mother is still seeking answers about the fatal Missouri truck accident that claimed her son’s life in October of 2010, according to KCTV.com.

On October 1, the woman’s son, a senior at a Missouri college, was heading to Kansas City for the weekend in a pickup driven by a friend. The students were travelling on Highway 71, just south of Highway 58, when a large truck in front of them began scattering debris, which included tree limbs and logs. Several motorists called 911 to report that the logs were on the road on a two to three mile area.

The driver of the pickup truck tried to dodge the debris. While trying to miss a large tree, the driver lost control of the vehicle, and it hit the median and flipped three times. The passenger was not wearing a seatbelt, and he was thrown 200 feet from the vehicle and died.

Fatal Missouri trucking accidents occur across the state on a regular basis because debris flew off of a tractor-trailer. Debris can be the load the truck was carrying, a large tire tread, ice or snow, or something else. Overloaded trucks in Missouri pose serious risks to truck drivers and others on the road should a truck unexpectedly release its load or rollover when making a sharp turn.

In order to prevent getting involved in a debris-related accident while sharing highways with tractor-trailers, there are a few basic safety tips to follow. First, don’t follow the tractor-trailer too closely. Give yourself enough space to stop if the materials being transported by the truck happen to come loose and suddenly dump onto the road. If you need to pass a truck, do not stay in the passing lane any longer than is necessary.

Trucking companies have a legal duty to ensure that trucks and truck drivers comply with weight and load safety rules and regulations. If you have been injured from debris falling from a tractor-trailer, you have rights. Call the Missouri truck accident attorneys at Page Law, LLC at 314-241-2273 to learn more about your legal options and how we can help you obtain compensation from negligent parties.

Truck accidents are capable of inflicting serious injuries upon those involved. Truck collisions may cause damage to a person’s vertebrae in the neck and cause irreversible damage to the spinal cord. Such damage may result in paralysis, quadriplegia or paraplegia. These are lifelong disabilities or catastrophic injuries that can change not only the lives of victims, but also the lives of their families. Paralysis of the lower trunk and lower extremities is known as paraplegia, while paralysis of most of the body, including the arms and legs, is known as quadriplegia.

Many truck accident injuries do not completely cut off the spinal cord. Such injuries most likely cause compression or fracture of the vertebrae. When this happens, a person may experience an interference with signals to and from the brain or the rest of the body. However, with good emergency care, aggressive treatment and rehabilitation, a good amount of truck accident injuries lead to a complete recovery. Still, treating spinal cord injuries can be extremely costly and painful for the victim.

If you have been injured as a result of a truck driver’s negligence, please remember that truck companies will send out their insurance adjusters, investigators and attorneys right away to get working on the case and begin their investigation. They will try to suppress or destroy evidence on the scene that may be important to your case.

You need an experienced Missouri truck accident spinal cord injury lawyer from Page Law on your side, fighting for your rights, and protecting your best interests. Our truck accident team will begin our investigation and make sure you have a strong case to obtain compensation to cover all medical costs, loss of earnings, and other damages. Call Page Law today at 1-866-620-5757 to schedule your free and comprehensive consultation.
